Air source heat pump installed outside a UK home

How an air source heat pump works

No fuel deliveries, no flame and no gas connection. A heat pump moves heat that already exists in the outside air into your home.

Step 1

Draws heat from outside air

A fan pulls outdoor air across a coil containing refrigerant. Even at -10°C the air holds usable heat.

Step 2

Compresses it to a higher temperature

An electric compressor raises the refrigerant temperature, the same principle as a fridge working in reverse.

Step 3

Heats your radiators and water

That heat is passed to your radiators and hot water cylinder, giving steady, even warmth all day.

Step 4

3 or more units of heat per unit of power

A well-designed system typically delivers around 3 kWh of heat for every 1 kWh of electricity it uses.

Heat pump savings: worked examples

Estimated yearly heating cost for a home needing 8,000 kWh of heat — typical of a small, older park home or bungalow.

£0 to install — normally around £10,000+

On a fully funded scheme you skip the biggest cost of all, then keep saving on every bill.

Real costs depend on your home, tariff and energy prices.
